The RISD Transition Program is a unique program of services provided by Richardson ISD for young adult students. This program began in 1992 under the leadership of district teachers and administrators in Special Education. The goals of this program are to successfully transition these individuals with disabilities from school to the adult world of work and community involvement.
What does the RISD Transition Program do?
This program supports these students and their families in learning how to use community resources rather than depending on school entitlement programs. Our direction is determined by the individual and their family values, interests and needs in the areas of employment, transportation, independent living, social interests/volunteering and adult education. We further our commitment to this integration through educating businesses and increasing public awareness of the benefit in employing individuals with disabilities. The services of the RISD Transition Program are also extended to businesses in increasing their employment of these individuals and in providing public recognition of innovative business practices.
RISD Transition Program highlights.
By the end of the1999-00 school year, 83% of the individuals who completed our program were competitively employed and were making connections in their community. National studies indicate the longevity of employment for individuals with significant developmental disabilities dramatically increases if they are competitively employed upon graduation. This means a savings of our tax dollars. We have also established several business partnerships that have been recognized with awards from the Dallas Mayor’s Committee for the Employment of People with Disabilities and the Northeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce for creating a welcoming work environment for people with disabilities.
What does the RISD Transition Program need from you?
We need you to join other local and national businesses in creating innovative employment opportunities for these individuals. Make this transition to employment a reality for these young adults.
